Coronavirus update: Health Care Agency declares emergency; still only one confirmed case in OC
The novel coronavirus, or COVID-1, is a newly discovered respiratory virus that was first identified in Wuhan City, China. It has since spread to other countries, including the United States. Cases have ranged from mild to severe, including illnesses that have resulted in death. While the Orange County Health Care Agency acknowledges the “situation is rapidly evolving,” officials say the risk to the general public remains low, as only one case has been identified in the county and there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission locally.

It’s reading, writing and tire-changing at Beckman High
Five shiny new cars sat on the campus blacktop in a wide circle – each offering a different learning station. About 100 students per period participated, for a total of more than 500 apprentice mechanics throughout the day. Worksheets in hand, the students rotated through seven-minute lessons in jump-starting dead batteries and checking oil levels. Mazda, Toyota, Hyundai and Jeep dealerships from Tustin Auto Center supplied cars and service staff.

“We were looking for the differences — we found out we’re a lot more similar than different,” said Huntington Beach High School surf coach Andy Verdone, while standing on the sand Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, where the French surfers mingled in the water with his team. “This is the most important interaction for young people, to make the world smaller.”

West Contra Costa Unified school board votes to lay off up to 300 workers in June
Facing a deficit of $47.8 million over the next two years, the West Contra Costa Unified school board on Wednesday voted 4-1 to eliminate 300 positions next year to save $22 million. But it hopes to rescind many of the layoffs in May if it is able to reach an agreement with unions for alternative cost-saving measures.

California’s online community college to face state audit
State lawmakers voted unanimously Wednesday to audit Calbright College, California’s online-only community college, just five months into its existence. The 14-0 vote by the Joint Committee on Legislative Audit signals that critics from the college’s faculty union have succeeded in raising doubts among lawmakers about whether the state needs a separate, online-only community college.
