A new program helps foster kids in Orange County avoid homelessness when they age out of public care
“To have a place to call your own is significant,” said Christopher M. Patterson, HUD’s regional administrator. Patterson has a personal connection to the foster youth program. As a younger person he bounced around in the state of Washington’s child-welfare system. And before being appointed to his current job earlier this year, he ran group homes in the Northwest through an agency he founded called Breakthrough.

Legal fight continues over H.B. blogger’s motion against Ocean View School District trustee
A Huntington Beach blogger is asking a state appeals court to set aside a lower court ruling and find that Ocean View School District trustee Gina Clayton-Tarvin sought to silence his criticism when she pursued a restraining order against him last year. During a hearing this week before a panel of judges in California’s 4th District Court of Appeal, Chad Morgan, lawyer for HB Sledgehammer publisher Charles “Chuck” Johnson, argued that the motion was wrongly struck down and should be granted, regardless of the lower court’s ruling on the restraining order.

State Could Intervene After OC Supervisors Halt Census Funds for City and School District
Orange County supervisors finalized plans this week to cut Census outreach money for the City of Santa Ana and Santa Ana Unified School District – a move city and school district officials called out as retaliation for raising public concerns about a proposed county homeless shelter in their city. Santa Ana is home to the largest number of hard-to count areas in Orange County for the Census, and a decision Tuesday by county supervisors to formally reject a recommendation for the funds has now prompted blowback from state and federal elected officials. State Sen. Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana) confirmed in a phone interview Wednesday he’s looking into ways to restore the funding.

The long road to college from California’s small towns
The exchange went awry quickly. Jill McWilliams, a high school guidance counselor in rural Anderson, California, was trying to persuade a student and her mother that the bright, motivated senior should apply to college. “The mom said to her daughter, ‘What, you think you’re better than us?’ The girl started crying and said, ‘No, I don’t. I’m sorry,” recounted McWilliams at Anderson New Technology High School in Shasta County. “This story isn’t unique. That’s all too often what we’re facing up here.” The girl did not go to college.

Reinventing a California school one teacher at a time
At a school that has seen many of its teachers leave every year, there’s one who for nearly two decades has been committed to staying and helping her students. “I treat them like they’re my own,” said Theresa Griffin, a 6th-grade teacher at Stege Elementary School, whose students are sometimes the children of her former students.
