OCDE will co-host two forums exploring impact of hate incidents on students, school communities
OCDE is partnering with the Orange County Human Relations Commission to host two forums in January that will explore the impact that hate has on students and the school community. “Building A Stronger, United Community By Addressing Hate-Motivated Incidents in Schools” will bring together law enforcement, local nonprofits and community members to openly address hate-motivated incidents and share strategies for supporting students in safer, more connected campuses.

Santa Margarita Catholic High student who posted a racist video is ‘no longer’ at the school, campus president says
A Santa Margarita Catholic High School student who posted a short Snapchat video of a black family and captioned it with a racist statement is no longer at the private school, its president, Andy Sulick, said. “In clear contradiction to the views and values of Santa Margarita Catholic High School, a student posted an inappropriate and insensitive message yesterday on social media,” Sulick said in the statement released on Thursday, Dec. 12. “Within hours of being informed, swift and definitive action was taken.”

After 5-year-old Katelynn Hardee heard another student’s mother say that she was having trouble “paying for something,” Katelynn came up with a plan, according to CNN. She asked her mother if she could set up a stand to sell hot cocoa and cookies. Karina Hardee, Katelynn’s mother, said that her daughter began asking questions about why this would happen, according to NBC San Diego. Karina explained to her that “some aren’t as fortunate as us and it is kind to give when we can.”

As staff on Thursday hailed the early report as a solid effort to stabilize district finances, school board members harangued the team for continued deficit spending and haphazard pecuniary habits in the wake of four school closures.

City, School District Hire Second School Resource Officer
The Laguna Beach Police Department announced this week that Officer Fred Yeilding has been selected as the second School Resource Officer (SRO) for the school district. The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board and the City of Laguna Beach recently agreed to jointly support a second SRO assigned to LBUSD campuses.

School Board Member Sues District
Laguna Beach Unified School District board member Dee Perry filed a lawsuit Tuesday in California federal court, claiming Superintendent Jason Viloria and her fellow board members have violated her constitutional rights to free speech, due process, and equal protection. The legal complaint in U.S. District Court is apparently the result of failed months-long negotiations between attorneys for Perry and the Laguna Beach Unified School District.
