Westminster gets a grant to honor the historic Mendez lawsuit that desegregated California schools
It’s been 70 years since the ground-breaking decision in the case of Mendez et al v. Westminster School District et al led to the end of segregation of Mexican American children in California schools. The court case helped paved the way to end school segregation nationwide a few years later. But while the landmark lawsuit has been honored with a U.S. Postal Service stamp, had an Emmy-winning documentary film made about it, and seen Sylvia Mendez, the daughter of the lead plaintiffs, honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011, in the city of Westminster there’s not really been a public place to honor the residents and the city’s role in this important piece of history.

Riverside high schooler honored for work to promote science, math to her peers
Growing up, Esther Koh dreamed of becoming a scientist. It wasn’t until she started high school and got involved with Project Lead the Way, a K-12 program that includes a focus on engineering, that the 17-year-old aspiring bioengineer learned she could combine her two loves. “If you are a creative person, there is so much you can do with engineering,” she said.

Some California state colleges focus on getting students through risky freshman year
The letter alerting Cal State Northridge students that they were being put on academic probation was pretty blunt and scary: shape up or risk getting kicked out. Enter a national project called “Re-Imagining the First Year of College,“ aimed at reducing college dropout rates during and soon after that first, vulnerable year in college.

Deciding At What Age To Give A Kid A Smartphone
It's the time of year when kids are thinking about their holiday wish lists. So what's a parent to do when a child, possibly a very young child, asks for a smartphone? We hear that smartphones can be addictive, that screen time can hurt learning, but can't these minicomputers also teach kids about responsibility and put educational apps at their tiny fingertips?

Video: How Canyon High welcomed displaced students during fire evacuations
On Oct. 9, as flames were quickly spreading nearby and thick smoke began to darken the skies, the Orange Unified School District made the call to evacuate three of its elementary campuses, transporting their students to Canyon High School. But, as the principal of Anaheim Hills Elementary shared with us, Canyon High did more than accommodate those who were displaced. ASB leaders, cheerleaders and members of the song team personally welcomed busloads of evacuees, cheering their arrival and directing them to the gymnasium with handmade signs.
