Teaching the teachers about Islam? Some say a workshop turned political
Small groups of teachers recently gathered, first in Los Angeles, then in Orange County, for workshops on topics such as Arabic music, the role of women in Islam and Islamophobia. The goal was to teach teachers, to give them information they could apply in their classrooms. Ultimately, the thinking went, all students would benefit, particularly Muslim students facing bullying and discrimination.

Parents march to protest a result of Irvine’s growing pains: Overcrowded schools
One of the fastest growing cities in California is experiencing some growing pains. The Irvine Unified School District is in the midst of redrawing school boundaries, particularly north of Interstate 5 where much of the housing development is taking place, to deal with what officials describe as “unprecedented growth.” Parents in those communities, however, are upset over the possibility that their children may not be able to attend schools closest to their homes or be torn apart from their friends.

Songs about computer coding? It's what happens when an arts school adds STEM focus
When Zane D’Amico enrolled at Renaissance Arts Academy in 2011, he expected the Los Angeles charter school to help him enhance his skills as a cellist. What he didn’t expect was that two years later the school would adopt a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) curriculum and he would be using engineering and math skills to build massive stages for the school’s dance, orchestra and singing performances. And he certainly didn’t anticipate joining classmates on stage to sing about the joys of computer coding.
