How Frida Kahlo and Jack Daniels led to a giant mural at Santa Ana High
This week, Dionisio Ceballos, 45, will start work as a muralist for the Santa Ana Unified School District. He has been commissioned to paint a giant abstract expressionist mural at Santa Ana High School. The mural, featuring iconic images from Mexican history and expressions of the movement and joy of teenagers, will cover 1,200 square feet over five 16-foot-high walls.

Charters’ choice for SPI gets endorsement lift
Four Democratic lawmakers announced Monday their support for Marshall Tuck, a charter loyalist, for state schools chief in advance of next year’s election. The endorsement came from state Senators Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and Steve Glazer, D-Orinda; along with Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio, D-West Covina, and Assemblyman Marc Berman, D-Menlo Park. It follows Assemblywoman Shirley Weber’s announcement earlier this month that she is also supporting Tuck.

Teachers could get a bigger deduction–or lose it entirely–under tax reform
Right now, teachers can deduct up to $250 of classroom related expenses paid out of pocket, but the future of that deduction – called the Educator Expense Deduction – is in flux. There are two versions of the proposed tax plan in Congress right now: one in the House of Representatives, and one in the U.S. Senate.
