Anonymous donor shares why he covered lunch debt for a Huntington Beach school district
He said he wanted one less obstacle in the bumpy path to education children too often must navigate. So a Huntington Beach man wrote a check for $7,813.50 to eliminate the debt Ocean View School District students had on the books from getting lunch. The philanthropist certainly didn’t open his wallet for a public pat on the back. Although he agreed to an interview, the donor insists on anonymity. “It’s not about me,” he said. “It’s about the kids. And it’s about planting a seed for people to look around and ask ‘How can I help my community?’”

Voters will be asked to approve $496 million bond measure for Rancho Santiago Community College District
Administrators of Santa Ana and Santiago Canyon community colleges will ask voters in March to approve raising $496 million through the sale of bonds to finance repairs to aging facilities and build modern learning spaces for students. Repaying the bonds is expected to add to property tax bills about $20 annually per $100,000 of assessed value. District trustees this week approved placing the measure on the March 3 ballot; it will require 55% approval to pass.

Line coach on San Juan Hills High School football team suspected of soliciting students for child pornography
Investigators believe an offensive line coach for a San Juan Capistrano high school football team propositioned multiple students to participate in child pornography, and sought the public’s help in identifying additional possible victims after he was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 30. Cole Austin Cazel, 22, of San Juan Capistrano, was arrested at about 12:30 p.m. on suspicion of contacting minors for the purpose of soliciting child pornography, Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials said in a news release. He was held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

These educational pathway programs at San Bernardino high schools are the toast of the state
Educational pathway programs at two San Bernardino City Unified high schools recently achieved Gold certification by the Linked Learning Alliance, a statewide coalition of education, industry and community organizations that strives to prepare students for college, career and life. On Oct. 15, school district leaders and Linked Learning representatives celebrated C.O.R.E. Academy’s Energy, Environmental and Utilities Pathway at Arroyo Valley High and Project Lead the Way’s Biomedical Pathway at Pacific High. The two are among the first in the country to achieve the distinction.

As fires rage, pressure mounts to train California’s next generation of forest stewards
While some California schools shut their doors in October during a blackout intended to prevent wildfires, lessons continued outdoors for a group of students tucked away high in the Santa Cruz mountains. There, high school students from Sacramento to Los Angeles gathered at Forestry Challenge, a statewide program and competition that aims to train students in technical forest skills and management.
