#kindness1billion: Here are some of the kind acts you’ve shared in October
They don’t always generate headlines, but kind acts happen every day in Orange County — and probably too many to count. Of course, that won’t stop us from trying. In 2016, OCDE launched its One Billion Acts of Kindness initiative to quantify kindness as part of a larger effort to promote civility, character and positive school climates.

Another lawsuit against Sacramento school district. This time it’s preschool teacher layoffs
The Sacramento city teachers union filed a lawsuit against the Sacramento City Unified School District on Tuesday, claiming the district board illegally laid off childcare program employees. The teachers union said the Early Childhood Development teachers were illegally laid off after the district misidentified them as classified employees, failed to lay them off based on seniority and chose to turn away funds for the program, according to a letter from the union’s legal counsel.

Is homegrown anti-bullying program working at Landmark Middle School, where boy died after assault?
Moreno Valley Unified has paid more than $20,000 for a flashcard-based, anti-bullying, system intended to defuse schoolyard confrontations. But after the death of a Landmark Middle School student in September, some residents — including Landmark students — are questioning its effectiveness. The district has not confirmed that bullying was a factor in the death of Diego Stolz, 13, as the investigation is continuing. But parents and community members have repeatedly alleged bullying was a factor and the district has held multiple events discussing anti-bullying policies since Stolz’s death.

When Fires Approach Schools, How Will Your District React? It Depends
The L.A. Unified School District closed more than 200 schools in the San Fernando Valley on Friday because of nearby fires and smoke. The announcement of the closings at both traditional and charter schools came before the start of the school day via emails, text alerts, and social media. But what happens if a fire approaches a school while classes are still in session? That's largely left to the discretion of each school.

California just pushed back school start times — you weren’t dreaming. Now what?
California school bells will soon ring later, the better to let adolescents get desperately needed shuteye. How will that work? Adults are still working it out. Of the dozens of education bills that Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law this year, few will have a more practical impact on everyday lives than the new, later start times for California’s high schools and middle schools.
