Air quality guidelines aim to address ongoing wildfire concerns
As wildfires spread across California this week, we want to remind you of the state Department of Education’s recently released a set of guidelines to help California school districts determine when to limit outdoor activities, or even when to cancel classes, because of poor air quality. There are currently no wildfires affecting Orange County communities.

Squabble might prompt state to take over Orange County education budget
In a move that the state is calling “legally and factually without precedent,” the Orange County Department of Education is nearly four months late in submitting a valid annual budget due to a deadlocked power struggle between the board and the superintendent. The California Department of Education warned the county earlier this month that it needed to settle the dispute by Oct. 8 or a state-appointed committee will step in to oversee the budget process. As of Monday, Oct. 28, a new majority voting bloc on the Board of Education and Superintendent Al Mijares had yet to end the standoff.

The run, walk and bike event features the Smart & Final 2K Fun Run, Tustin Auto Center 5K, a timed 10K and it second-ever half marathon. Last year, the Dino Dash attracted some 7,000 participants and raised more than $200,000. Proceeds from the event benefit Tustin Unified students.

With or without power, 3 San Bernardino schools will be open Tuesday after SCE shutdown
Three San Bernardino City Unified School District schools were without power Monday morning, Oct. 28, after Southern California Edison shut down power to the areas where they’re located and they will remain open for classes on Tuesday. Linda Bardere, director of Communications at SBCUSD, said schools will remain open as usual on Tuesday regardless of if power is restored or not. “If the schools are without power, students will use pencils and books and things that don’t require the use of technology,” she said.

In-school suspensions the answer to school discipline? Not necessarily, experts say
More California schools are allowing disruptive students to serve suspensions on campus instead of sending them home. But experts said educators need to provide those students with high-quality behavior counseling for that approach to be successful. Schools throughout the state have embraced in-school suspensions in recent years, as studies have shown that traditional out-of-school suspensions can hurt students’ academic performance and actually make behavior problems worse.

Changing palates: Alhambra high schools dish up house-made pho and ramen
Last school year, Alhambra High student Krystal Li ate spicy chicken sandwiches from the cafeteria every day. They were good enough, the now-junior said, and she didn’t have to worry about bringing lunch. This school year, the cafeteria started serving pho — the Vietnamese noodle soup — twice a week, and Li said she has been hooked ever since.
