Orange County Classical Academy starts first day of school — away from school
This isn’t how students at the Orange County Classical Academy expected to start their first day of school. Throughout the day Thursday, Aug. 25, parents and students showed up in their cars at the charter school in Orange during assigned time slots. They weren’t there to drop off children, but instead to pick up school materials as well as free breakfasts and lunches for some. For now, school is taking the shape of independent study either at home or at a church in Irvine. The OCCA public charter school began its academic year off campus because it couldn’t finish construction work, including installing three required fire hydrants, in time for it to open its doors as planned on Aug. 25.

California does little to ensure all kids read by third grade
California fourth graders trail the nation in reading, and half of its third graders, including two-thirds of Black students and 61% of Latino students, do not read at grade level. Yet, California is not among the states that have adopted comprehensive literacy plans to ensure that all children can read by third grade. And California has not set a timeline or given any indication it intends to create such a plan.

Legislation to limit remedial classes heads to Newsom’s desk
Legislation that would limit the ability of community colleges to enroll students in remedial classes passed the Senate on Thursday and now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk. Assembly Bill 1705 builds off Assembly Bill 705, the 2017 legislation that says colleges must enroll students in courses that are transferrable to the University of California and California State University and not remedial classes, unless they are deemed “highly unlikely to succeed” in the transfer-level courses.

An 8th grader knows a lot about Millard Fillmore, no, really, he does
An 8th grader in Bloomington Indiana has won a first ever national presidential history video contest – called Project POTUS for his delightful short film on the 13th U.S. president, Millard Fillmore. Yes, Millard Fillmore, who, when serving a vice president in 1850, became president upon the death of Zachery Taylor and failed to win the presidency on his own in the election of 1854. The winning video, by Oscar McDermott-Snipe, was announced Thursday. Project POTUS is sponsored by the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site and is open to middle schoolers in an effort to spur interest in presidential history, according to the site.
