VIDEO: County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Mijares celebrates 10 years with OCDE |
Wearing a black suit and tie and standing across from retired California legislator Marian Bergeson, Dr. Al Mijares raised his right hand as he took the oath of office as Orange County Superintendent of Schools. That event took place nearly 10 years ago on Oct. 10, 2012. At that time, he had been serving as superintendent for three months after he was appointed by county trustees to replace retiring Superintendent William Habermehl. Dr. Mijares would go on to be elected to full terms in 2014, 2018 and, most recently, in 2022. |

OC Board of Education elections not moving to November |
The Orange County Board of Education’s five members escaped a change to how they are elected after a bill recently died in the California Legislature. Voters will continue to elect OCBE members in the summertime primaries as opposed to the November general election, as Sen. Dave Min’s bill sought to do. Board of Education President Lisa Sparks called the bill’s defeat “a victory for Orange County voters, local control, and common sense electioneering.” |

Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman pledges $500,000 to build clubhouse for El Modena High |
Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman has some ideas for making El Modena High’s baseball players just a little more comfortable and ready to win more championships.
And he’s using his own money to do it. “I want to help them build a clubhouse and bring kids that hopefully want to come to El Modena,” he said of his alma mater in Orange. Freeman essentially went straight from the ElMo field to the farm fields of the Atlanta Braves organization as a second-round draft pick after graduation in 2007. He was quickly called up to the Braves and came west this year to the Dodgers as a free agent.

Capo Unified Board Elections Draw Candidates Looking to Address Educational Policy, COVID Measures |
After the local school board elections this fall, some new faces are expected to represent parents and make educational decisions in South Orange County.
Elections will be held on Nov. 8 for seats on the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees representing areas 2, 4 and 7. Area 2 covers portions of San Juan Capistrano and Ladera Ranch; Area 4 covers parts of Laguna Niguel and Dana Point; and Area 7 includes parts of Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo and Coto de Caza.
The race for Area 2 is a specially called election because of the resignation of former Trustee Pamela Braunstein earlier this year over what she said was harassment for her support of COVID-19 policies.

Frustration after bilingual education bill dies in State Assembly |
A bill that would have helped school districts open more dual-language immersion programs fizzled in the California State Assembly this month, crushing the hopes of many advocates of bilingual education. Senate Bill 952 would have established a program to offer at least 20 school districts technical assistance and grants of up to $750,000 each to expand or establish dual-language immersion programs. |

Keep an eye on your student's mental health this back-to-school season |
Students across the country are moving into dorms or getting ready to board school buses for their first day of class. But unlike the past two years, COVID-19 numbers are down nationally and most students are walking in the school doors without masks. From kindergarten all the way through college, educators are trying to convey a sense of normalcy, and for Dr. Richard Martini, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the University of Utah, that push comes with added baggage. |

Poll: Support for schools shook by pandemic |
The historically positive views toward public schools took a hit during the pandemic, according to poll results released Tuesday.
In 2019, 60% of Americans graded their schools an A or a B. But after more than two years of disruption, 52% give those marks in the latest Education Next survey, which has measured opinions on major education topics for 16 years.

Sunny Hills High student receives study abroad scholarship |
Aidan Wong needed to make a choice – what language to take during high school. Spanish. Korean. Mandarin. German. “I didn’t want to take Spanish because virtually everyone takes it,” Wong said. “I don’t have any connection to Korean so it didn’t interest me. And I am Cantonese so while the writing taught is the same (traditional script), the pronunciation is very different. I was also really interested in Dutch and Dutch and German are part of the same language family so I thought, why not?”
Fast forward to senior year when Wong was taking International Baccalaureate German Standard Level. His teacher prompted the class to participate in the National German Exam, which took place in January.

LAUSD faculty, staff address barriers leading to chronic absence |
In the days leading up to LAUSD return to school this week, teachers and staff across the District made house calls to ensure students’ basic needs are met.
A recent LA Times report revealed nearly half of all LAUSD students were considered chronically absent for most of last school year and that number is even higher in low-income areas like Watts. There, the principal of the Compton Avenue Elementary STEAM Academy went door-to-door to address the barriers that often prevent her students from making it to class.
