Progressive School Leaders Embrace What Was Once Taboo: Pay Incentives for Teachers
The move seems plenty rational for a school district flush with federal COVID relief money and struggling, like so many others, to put a teacher in every classroom. But not too long ago there was fierce resistance to pay incentives of any kind. While studies on merit pay have found it did not push teachers to teach better, studies on hardship pay have shown results. One study found that a $20,000 bonus was enough to bring high-quality teachers into high-poverty schools for two years. Those teachers also got better results and 60 percent of them stayed even after the two years was up, as Slate reported.

Bellflower Unified board puts superintendent on leave after attorney calls vote not to renew contract ‘unlawful’
Bellflower Unified School District’s Superintendent Tracy McSparren has been placed on a paid administrative leave for the foreseeable future as of Tuesday, June 28 — after the district’s attorney called the Board of Education’s June 16 vote to not renew her employment contract “unlawful.” David Bristol, an attorney who works with BUSD, said during public comment that the June 16 decision was "unlawful" — because the law requires at least 45 days notice prior to the termination of an employment contract.

Polk Elementary School in Fresno will be renamed following Central school board vote
Central Unified School District will rename James K. Polk Elementary, following a contentious yearlong debate over the school’s namesake’s racist views and actions. The school board voted 5-2 on Tuesday to rename Polk, but also voted 7-0 against renaming Houghton-Kearney Elementary, another school being considered for renaming. The board voted 4-2-1 to change the current logo of Madison Elementary, which depicts a Native American wearing a headdress.

Charter schools, abundant in California, could be a Supreme Court target
For all the controversy surrounding it, the latest ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court broadening the obligation of states to fund private religious schools will have no direct impact on California. California does not finance private schools, at issue in the 6-3 decision on June 21 involving the state of Maine. And there’s no indication that it will anytime soon. The latest effort to introduce a voucher-like subsidy for private schools died this year for lack of enough signatures to put the initiative on the state ballot. Earlier similar statewide initiatives lost by 2-1 margins.

San Diego Unified school board welcomes new student members
San Diego Unified School District trustees said goodbye to their first-ever student board member Tuesday. Zachary Patterson, 19, graduated from University City High School earlier this month. He helped create the student position he’s held since December 2019. Patterson started campaigning for student representation on the board when he was in middle school. Although the position is a non-voting role, he committed to making student voices heard on every issue. Before his term ended, Zachary led the effort to expand student representation on the board to two.
