VIDEO: What is the California health education framework? Here’s your two-minute primer — also available in Spanish
In 2019, the California Department of Education asked the Orange County Department of Education to lead the state Health Education Framework rollout by providing optional guidance for K-12 teachers in public schools based on the state’s health education standards. Since then, OCDE has assisted in creating a professional learning series and supplemental materials to help teachers deliver standards-based instruction and implement the updated guidance provided by the framework. The project also engaged all county offices of education through a statewide community of practice that continues to convene, building the capacity of leaders supporting health education implementation in schools throughout the state.

Supreme Court school prayer ruling stirs debate over how far religion will seep into campus
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to permit a high school football coach to pray on the field after games is expected to reopen a vigorous and probably tense debate among parents, educators and others over how far religion can enter public school grounds, California education and legal experts said Monday. Conservatives and some Christian leaders praised the court’s action, saying it allowed for the personal religious expression of the coach and those who voluntarily followed him, a reasonable accommodation to religious and free speech rights. But civil libertarians and many educators said allowing a coach or any other school authority figure to lead a prayer amounted to the kind of establishment of religion that the Constitution forbids.

San Dieguito District Board Fires Superintendent
The San Dieguito Union High School District board unanimously voted to terminate Superintendent Cheryl James-Ward at a special board meeting on Sunday. The decision will be effective Aug. 15. The board did not provide a reason as to why she was terminated without cause. James-Ward had been on administrative leave since April after she made comments during a diversity, equity and inclusion training session implying that Asian students are academically successful because they are from wealthy families who come from China.

LAUSD Assigns Millions In Funding For 'Green Schoolyards'
A years-long pandemic. A youth mental health crisis. School shootings. Kids and schools have a lot to deal with these days. Worsening extreme heat is yet another challenge to add to the list. Last week, the board of the L.A. Unified School District (LAUSD) approved a $13 billion-dollar operating budget that includes funding to help. Some $58 million of those funds are slated to go towards outdoor education initiatives, as well as adding more green space to L.A.’s famously asphalt-heavy schoolyards — something advocates say is a long time coming.
