Students virtually showcase STEM-based innovations at seventh annual ocMaker Challenge
More than 150 students from across Orange County have virtually exhibited over 60 STEM-based designs demonstrating creativity and ingenuity at this year’s ocMaker Challenge. Organized by OCDE’s Career Education unit, the annual event draws hundreds of elementary, middle and high school students each year who are eager to show off their creative inventions and compete for a variety of awards determined by panels of industry professionals. Challenge teams begin as early as October, collaborating, designing and building prototypes with varying degrees of difficulty.

Orange County Friday Night Live Partnership honors local chapters and advisors
OCDE’s Orange County Friday Night Live Partnership (OCFNLP) has honored two local schools and an advisor for their efforts to promote youth development and implement alcohol and drug prevention projects in their schools and communities. Although held virtually, OCFNLP celebrated honorees at its annual Chapter Recognition ceremony on May 20 where leaders presented the partnership’s most prestigious awards of the year.

Student Mask Requirements Dominate Discussions at Tense CUSD Meeting
During a school board meeting filled with various agenda items, one topic stood out and led to contentious exchanges—masks. Parents and children spoke out against mask mandates for students during a Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting that began Wednesday night and finished after 1:30 a.m. Thursday. CUSD students have been required to wear masks while on campus and indoors.

District to ‘disconnect’ $360,000 air cleaning devices following lawsuit

After a rough year, senior formal this spring was both joyous, bittersweet
In a perfect night of taffeta and glitter, the most perfect thing of all was Lauren Toon’s sky-blue prom dress. Lauren’s mother helped her pick the sleek satin gown a year ago – blue to match Lauren’s eyes. Lauren planned to wear the dress at her high school prom last year when she was a junior, but school officials canceled the event at the last minute due to the pandemic. And then in September, Lauren’s mother died of Covid-19.
