COVID-19 update: California mask requirements remain unchanged after CDC announcement
The OC Health Care Agency clarified on Monday that the state hasn’t yet changed its face covering requirements despite new recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for vaccinated people. On May 13, the CDC announced that “fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.” But Governor Gavin Newsom has said California’s mask mandate would be relaxed on June 15, a move that would give Orange County’s health officer the latitude to amend his local order.

How COVID mourning runs so deep that a school district stays closed
Schools race to reopen, but a small school district in Pico Rivera is not among them. “We can’t just pick up where we left off,” the superintendent says. Supt. Frances Esparza knew of too many parents who had called seeking an excused absence so their child could attend a funeral. She had read too many emails saying students missed classes because a family member was hospitalized.

The Case For Universal Pre-K Just Got Stronger
According to the National Institute For Early Childhood Research, nearly half of all three-year-olds and a third of all four-year-olds in the United States were not enrolled in preschool in 2019. That's in large part because many parents can't afford it. Imagine a future where we changed that. A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research gives us a glimpse of what that world could look like. It adds to a burgeoning amount of high-quality research that shows just how valuable preschool is — and maybe not for the reasons you might think.
