COVID-19 update: Othena system, used by OC to register for vaccinations, now available in Spanish
The online system for Orange County residents and workers to register for their COVID-19 vaccinations — and schedule appointments when they’re eligible — is now available in Spanish. Those who visit the Othena.com website can click on “English” at the top of the page and select “Español” to receive instructions in Spanish. Officials say a Vietnamese language version is coming soon, and additional updates to the Othena app are in the works. While shortages have been reported across the country, more than 570,000 Orange County residents and workers have been registered through Othena since Jan. 1, and more than 131,000 individuals have been vaccinated, county officials said. Nearly 144,000 appointments have been scheduled.

Teachers face pressure to return even before COVID-19 vaccinations completed
The battle over reopening California schools intensified Wednesday when Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Biden administration said campuses can safely reopen without teachers being vaccinated — and unions pushed back, calling for school workers to be immunized as part of any sweeping reopening effort to return students to classrooms. Echoing the debate, the Southern California chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics called for schools to open immediately, asserting that the harms of keeping children out of school outweigh the risks of reopening. Meanwhile, United Teachers Los Angeles accused officials of playing politics with the lives of its members, students and their families.

Southern California pediatricians call for L.A.-area schools to immediately reopen
Los Angeles County campuses that closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic should immediately reopen, according to a regional affiliate of the American Academy of Pediatrics, because the harms of keeping children out of school outweigh the risks of safely and carefully managed classrooms.

Newsom on return of youth and high school sports: ‘We want to see this happen"
If a high school football season doesn’t happen in this spring, or any number of other sports, really, it won’t be for a lack of effort. The hurdles thus far have been too steep to clear, the colored tiers not nearly favorable enough to allow competition, showing too much angry purple. Teenagers from San Diego County at the southern border of California to Siskiyou County at the northern border and all points between have been ready since March.

Schools can safely move to reopen even if teachers are not all vaccinated, Newsom says
Gov. Gavin Newsom said he believes schools can begin to reopen even if all teachers are not yet vaccinated against COVID-19, provided that proper safety measures and supports are in place — although some teachers unions, including United Teachers Los Angeles, have said vaccinations should be a prerequisite to resuming in-person instruction. “We can safely reopen schools as we process a prioritization to our teachers of vaccinations,” Newsom said Wednesday.

Report: California ‘wasting’ millions of dollars funding online charter schools
A new report on California’s online charter schools says that the state is “wasting hundreds of millions of dollars a year by funding these schools at a level far above their costs.” The report, published Tuesday by a Washington -D.C.-based nonprofit research and policy organization called In the Public Interest, also says that the “track record of online charter schools has been uniformly negative for every demographic subgroup of students” despite the promise of online education.

Credential testing required for California teachers would be reduced under new proposal
California teacher candidates may be able to use coursework they have taken to satisfy their degree requirements to prove they are ready to teach, instead of taking some state tests currently required to obtain a teaching credential, according to a proposal by Gov. Gavin Newsom. If legislators approve the proposal, teacher candidates will no longer have to take the California Basic Educational Skills Test, or CBEST, or the California Subject Examinations for Teachers, otherwise known as the CSET. Those two tests are among several that teacher candidates are required to pass before they earn a credential, and many potential teachers have failed.

By deciding to sue its own school board and district, San Francisco has opened up a new front on the battleground to open schools for in-person instruction. The city filed suit in the San Francisco Superior Court Wednesday for what City Attorney Dennis Herrera alleges are violations of a state law requiring districts to adopt a clear plan during the pandemic “to offer classroom-based instruction whenever possible,” as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
