Huntington Beach schools receive $1,000 art ‘mini-grants’ |
A grant allowed Dwyer Middle School music teacher Shaianne Homann to spearhead the Just Keep Strumming ukulele project. Over an eight-week period, 17 Dwyer students who signed up got to design and build their own ukuleles. They learned to play songs on them and built up their skills to a live performance for family and friends. “That grant funded everything,” Homann said. The grants were provided through the Educational Enrichment Foundation for the Arts. Elementary or middle school educators from the HBUHSD geographical area can apply for a 2023 mini-grant. |

Does your district have what it takes to significantly improve? |
The late-night musing of the CEO of Oakland-based Pivot Learning, a national nonprofit that works with school districts on improving classroom instruction, inspired a deep exploration into factors behind a successful school district. And that led to the release last week of the District Readiness Index. An interactive website based on publicly available data, it lists the organizational strengths that are vital to the creation of enduring school improvement. It then measures how well 420 California school districts — those with at least 2,500 students — meet them. |

New legislation would require schools to stock reversal drug for fentanyl overdoses |
It may soon be mandatory for California schools to stock Narcan, the drug that can save the lives of people overdosing on the synthetic opioid fentanyl, The Los Angeles Times reported. The proposal is part of legislation introduced by both Democratic and Republican state lawmakers this week that aims to increase information about the presence of fentanyl on K-12 campuses. The drug can be fatal and consumed unknowingly when it’s hidden in other drugs such as oxycodone and Adderall. |

The measure, if approved by two-thirds of district voters, would continue the tax at the same annual rate it has been since 2014, $251 per parcel, for eight years. |

Missing an opportunity: Ed Dept. criticized by GAO for teacher shortage strategy |
With the nation’s schools facing acute teacher shortages, the GAO criticized the U.S. Department of Education’s strategy for not adequately addressing the crisis and guiding states’ in how to attract and retain more educators. As teachers nationwide face “an increasingly disrespectful and demanding school workplace culture,” and compensation concerns, the GAO charged in a report released last month the education department failed to establish a timeline and measures to gauge progress in resolving regional teacher shortages. |
