With grant funding available, OCDE supports classified employees pursuing teaching credentials
If any classified school employee was waiting for a sign to take the necessary steps to pursue their teaching credential, this is it. The California Classified School Employee Teacher Credentialing Program, established by the state Commission on Teacher Credentialing, created a five-county consortium to address the state’s teacher shortage in STEM, special education, bilingual education and transitional kindergarten. The consortium is led by the Orange County Department of Education and includes the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, along with the Butte and Imperial county offices of education.

Revisiting the day that lives in infamy: Two Pearl Harbor survivors share their stories
Ray Chavez still clearly recalls the “date which will live in infamy.” He remembers the mysterious submarine that crept along the ocean’s surface in the predawn darkness before it was sunk by the USS Ward. He remembers the Japanese bombers and fighter planes that stormed the base just before 8 a.m. He remembers the men who desperately plunged into the harbor, fighting through thick oil and grease leaking from sunken U.S. ships.

Travel agent charged with embezzling more than $400,000 from parents for school trips
A San Diego-based travel agent has been charged with embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from Orange and Los Angeles county parents for eighth grade school trips to the East Coast that were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Marie Colette Martin, 52, pleaded not guilty on Monday, Dec. 5, to 27 felony counts of grand theft and seller of travel violations, according to the state Attorney General’s Office. She is accused of embezzling more than $415,000, spending the funds on personal expenses rather than refunding parents after the trips were canceled.

School principal, cellist who leaped to his death at Disneyland remembered as positive influence
Newland Elementary School principal and professional cellist Christopher Christensen was the life of the party at a private event in late October, just like he was at most of his gigs, longtime friend Dianna Gray said. He performed with equal measures of professionalism and glee as he and a small ensemble of musicians led a packed dance floor through the waltz. “He was playing at his best,” Gray, a fellow musician and a teacher with the Irvine Unified School District, said.
