After-school coordinator from OC is one of state’s expanded learning leaders
An after-school program coordinator from the Fullerton School District has been honored for her efforts to provide high-quality expanded learning opportunities for local students and families. Sandra Mendoza, who is based at Raymond Elementary School, is one of just four recipients of the 2021 California Expanded Learning Leadership Award. The winners were announced last week by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond. Mendoza was recognized in the Emerging Leadership category.

Tustin Unified names new superintendent
The Tustin Unified School District will soon have a new superintendent. Dr. Mark Johnson, who currently serves as a local superintendent in the Fountain Valley School District, has been selected to lead the district, pending Board of Trustee approval at the Nov. 15 meeting. He succeeds Dr. Greg Franklin who will retire on Dec. 31 after serving as the district’s superintendent for the past 10 years.

Federal advisory committee, CDC director to decide on vaccines for kids ages 5-11: COVID-19 updates
A federal advisory committee will meet Tuesday to decide whether to recommend COVID-19 vaccines to children ages 5 to 11. If the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices decides the benefits of vaccination outweigh risks in this age group, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would make a recommendation. If Dr. Rochelle Walensky signs off, vaccines would become available as soon as Wednesday at pharmacies and pediatricians’ offices.

LAUSD launches pilot All Kids Bike program in kindergarten classes
All Kids Bike, a new program designed to teach children how to ride a bike, is now offered at Marvin Elementary and 6th Avenue Elementary schools in Los Angeles, according to the program’s organizers. The schools, which are part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, have launched pilot programs last Friday, Oct. 29, led by the nonprofit Strider Education Foundation, designed to teach children how to ride a bike and stay active.
