High schoolers compete in the 53rd annual Orange County Academic Decathlon |
Around this time of year, hundreds of students would typically gather over two consecutive Saturdays to compete for individual and team honors at the Orange County Academic Decathlon. Owing to the pandemic, large events are out. But the 53rd annual decathlon will go on, and in fact it’s already underway this month as a virtual event sponsored by Del Taco, NuVision Federal Credit Union, Disney VoluntEARs and Aeries Software. This year’s theme is the Cold War.

California teachers could get Covid-19 vaccinations starting in February |
A state effort to develop a more streamlined approach to vaccinating California residents against Covid-19 may get teachers their shots sooner. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the changes, which include a transition to an age-based eligibility system, in a press conference Monday. Starting next month, teachers and others in Phase 1B of the state’s vaccination priority list could begin to be vaccinated, even in counties where healthcare workers, who are in Phase 1A, are still being vaccinated. |

Don't Call It A Comeback: School Districts That Never Opened Are Having Trouble Now |
The idea that opening Chicago's school buildings in February 2021, 11 months after they shut down, constitutes "rushing back" would be news in most of the country. As of the third week of January, 58% of students nationwide were in districts with at least some in-person learning. That's according to the organization Burbio, which scrapes a selection of school websites for the data. However, Burbio estimates that about a third of the country's students have not had a single day in school since last March. This includes much of the West Coast, the Mid-Atlantic and some big cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Atlanta.

Educators, food workers join California’s priority list for vaccines |
Educators, childcare workers, food and farm workers and first responders will join Californians age 65 and over who have priority to qualify for the coronavirus vaccine, state officials announced today. After that large group is vaccinated, the next priority group will be based on age — and middle-aged Californians are likely to be next in line.

California public schools suffer record enrollment drop |
California’s K-12 public-school enrollment has precipitously declined during the pandemic, dropping by a record 155,000 students, according to new state projections.
That drop-off is about five times greater than California’s annual rate of enrollment decline in recent years. The state, which boasts the largest student enrollment in the country, has seen a steady decline of between 20,000 and 30,000 students in its public schools in the two years prior partly due to declining birth rates, and the state had predicted a similar rate of decline to continue. |
