OCDE NEWSROOM

How much do you know about vaping?
In presentations to educators and parents, OCDE Prevention Coordinator Stephan Lambert displays some of the electronic cigarettes and vaping devices that have been confiscated at schools. His point is quickly and visually evident — these don’t look like smoking devices. Some closely resemble flash drives, highlighters or correction tape. Others could be easily mistaken for makeup cases, credit card holders or batteries.

France cellphone ban takes effect as kids return to school without devices
French children are saying “bonjour” to the new academic year — and “au revoir” to their cellphones during school hours. That’s because a new law has come into effect which outlaws phone use by students up to the age of 15. The legislation, which follows a campaign promise by French President Emmanuel Macron, also banishes tablets and smart watches.

New ‘friendlier’ look coming for California’s school dashboard
The much-maligned California School Dashboard is getting a makeover. The dashboard is the website that rates districts, schools and student groups on test scores, student suspensions and a range of measures on a scale of five colors. It’s a key element of the state’s new school accountability system, which emphasizes performance on individual indicators without a single summative rating like a letter grade.

Rare mix of disorders could require out-of-state placement
A student diagnosed with emotional disturbance as well as a complex autoimmune disorder would get educational services as well as room and board at a Utah facility, under a proposal pending before the state board. The Chico Unified School District has asked the board to waive state requirements that out-of-state placement for a student with disabilities must be to a facility that has been certified by the California Department of Education to provide the needed services.
