LA parents demand ‘equitable education’ as prospect of first LAUSD teachers strike in decades looms |
As the prospect of an LA teachers’ strike loomed, parents showed up at Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters on Wednesday demanding “equitable education.”
Nonprofit group ParentRevolution bused in the group of about 25 parents from East and South Los Angeles Wednesday to deliver 1,300 parent signatures to headquarters demanding that district leaders find a way to resolve differences as the possibility of the first strike by the district’s teachers in more than two decades grows.

Under local pressure, California school districts adopt lower lead limits for water |
Two years ago, McClymonds High School in Oakland found alarmingly high lead levels in water coming from a locker room shower. Water from some fountains and sinks tested high as well, leading health and community activists to demand that the district ensure safe water for all children. As the new school year begins, Oakland is carrying out an aggressive strategy to limit lead in water by expanding water testing, installing filtered water stations and adopting a lead limit of 5 parts per billion, lower than the state and federal limit of 15 parts per billion.

New laws expand efforts to limit childhood lead exposure |
With increasing awareness of the health risks posed by lead exposure, a pair of bills signed last week aim to improve public awareness and treatment of students suspected of lead exposure in schools and daycare facilities. One bill signed Friday by Gov. Jerry Brown expands lead testing in drinking water within California’s child care centers and requires parents receive written information about childhood blood lead testing requirements.
