LA Chargers working to boost physical fitness among OC students |
The Los Angeles Chargers want to help more students in Orange County become physically fit. So they’re reaching out to campuses that might want to host mini “training camps” as part of the NFL PLAY 60 campaign. Charger representatives met this week at Orange County Department of Education headquarters with about 50 physical education teachers from throughout the county to explain how they could have their schools join the campaign, which encourages children to spend at least 60 minutes each day in physical activities. |

Voting rolls are getting younger in California as pre-registration of teens tops 200,000 |
More than 200,000 California teenagers have pre-registered to vote since 2016, further evidence that the youth vote might play a larger role than usual in this year’s mid-term elections. The pre-registration milestone, announced Tuesday by Secretary of State Alex Padilla during a news conference at Francis Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles, includes 100,000 registered voters who will be eligible to vote in the November election. |

Lead problems in water linger at Los Angeles schools, despite years of testing and repairs |
Los Angeles Unified, the nation’s second-largest district, has spent more than $30 million on lead testing and water system repairs over the last decade with the approval of county health authorities. Yet the district took limited action to remove lead-contaminated fixtures from its schools and its practices fall short of what many experts on the toxic metal say should be done to protect children. |

New law requires defibrillators at athletic events |
Legislation aimed at improving California’s poor record in protecting student athletes from sudden cardiac arrest, or SCA, won passage Wednesday from a legislative policy committee. AB 2009 by Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, R-San Diego, would require school districts and charters that participate in interscholastic athletics to have at least one automatic external defibrillator, or AED, at each school site. |

Need Help Paying For College? There's An App For That |
At midnight, Oct. 1, the rush begins. That's when first-time and returning college students can get their first look at the 2019-'20 FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Anyone who wants the government's help paying for college has to finish the notoriously complicated form. But this year, in an effort to make it easier, the U.S. Department of Education has given the FAFSA a new look: a smartphone application. |
