Learning by Design: how high school students handled a two-day aerospace industry simulation
The 24th annual International Space Settlement Design Competition, known as SpaceSet, took place July 28-31 in Titusville, Fla. My school, University High in Irvine, was one of four finalist winners of the international qualifying competition.

Irvine high school senior builds and races self-driving vehicle at MIT camp
Matthew Tang was browsing the Internet, looking for ways to spend the summer before his senior year in high school. The Irvine teenager with a passion for engineering and computer science came across a perfect opportunity: An all-expense-paid trip to build a self-driving car at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tang, who goes to Northwood High School, was among 98 rising seniors from around the country selected to participate in the 2017 MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute and develop autonomous race cars, autonomous drones or artificial intelligence assistants like Apple’s Siri.

Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar high schools announce National Merit semifinalists
Seniors from Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar high schools have been named semifinalists for National Merit scholarships, school officials said. Laguna’s Charlotte Hoffs, Andrew Keyser, Joseph Ravenna and Ben Sharp and CdM’s Jeffrey H. Goldenberg, John A. Marlo, Liam Mickelsen, Lian M. Stemler and Ryan Tolsma will each have the opportunity to earn one of 7,500 scholarships, worth more than $32 million, next spring.

Why this nonprofit is taking Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA out of museums and into schools
Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA is taking over museums and galleries across Southern California, but visiting those venues isn't the only opportunity for students to interact with its content. Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA and the LA Promise Fund kicked off its opportunities for students to engage in art – like its student art contest – by bringing arts activities to over 300 students in the central courtyard at Manual Arts High School in South Los Angeles Wednesday morning.

Orange Unified School District names interim superintendent
The Orange Unified School District’s Board of Trustees has appointed Gunn Marie Hansen as interim superintendent to replace retired schools chief Michael Christensen. Hansen, who previously worked as Orange Unified’s deputy superintendent of educational services, will serve as head of the 28,500-student district while a permanent replacement is found.
