SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SUN

How San Bernardino administrators are learning the concerns of students walking to school
School district officials walked a mile in their students’ shoes — more or less — before class Monday, stepping over broken glass and past stray dogs to get a better idea of the challenges students face walking to and from school. San Bernardino City Unified School District employees and others walked from 18 locations, each about a 20 minute walk from one of the district’s five mainstream high schools, with students joining many of the walks.

CSU faculty rebels against changes in remedial and math education, calls for delay
The California State University faculty is rebelling against recently announced changes in remedial education and math requirements at the 23-campus system and wants delays of at least a year. So far the university’s administration shows no indication of slowing down. But if the university’s governing board agrees with the faculty, one of the most ambitious education reform efforts in California higher education in decades could be delayed or overhauled.

Bills supporting diverse student body move to Gov.
A pair of bills headed to the Governor’s desk will allow students to wear cultural adornments during graduation ceremonies, and will require schools to inform parents of English learners of their child’s language development progress. AB 81, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, D-San Diego, aims to ensure that parents know whether a school has classified their child as a “long-term English Learner” or an “at risk, long-term English learner” and what the implications of that classification might be.

Lawmakers reject bill requiring later start time for California middle, high schools
A bill to require middle and high schools across California to start the school day no earlier than 8:30 a.m. failed to win enough support among state lawmakers. Senate Bill 328 fell short in the state Assembly last week with a vote of 26-30. That means groggy teens looking to get more rest before school will just have to go to bed earlier.
