El Toro softball field gets sweet makeover thanks to Irvine company
It was a sight all too common to see at El Toro High’s softball field – a ground ball would take a bad hop, jump up and hit an infielder in the face, leaving a trail of bloody lips and broken noses. However, coaches and players hope those days are a thing of the past after the field received a sweet makeover thanks to a $100,000 contribution from Irvine-based Morinaga America.

California approved $9 billion for schools. Why aren’t we spending the money?
California school officials and other supporters of last November’s Proposition 51 are growing impatient that, more than nine months after voters approved the $9 billion school-construction measure, the state has not sold any of the authorized bonds. They say hundreds of projects to remodel and build schools are waiting for the money.

LA County says Montebello Unified could go broke by 2019
The Montebello Unified School District is projected to go broke by the end of the 2018-19 school year, according to a letter from the county. The school district has been in hot water with the Los Angeles County Office of Education for the past year over its money management. A wave of rescinded pink slips in April and May seemed to signal the end of those concerns, but a letter obtained by this news organization from county to board President Lani Cupchoy shows the district may still be headed for a state takeover.
