Renewed push to offer SAT and ACT as California's 11th-grade test |
Gov. Jerry Brown may soon decide whether to let California school districts choose to give high school juniors the SAT or ACT instead of the state’s current standardized tests in math and English language arts. He’ll be lobbied hard by both sides of the issue if Assembly Bill 1951 does pass its last hurdle — approval by the state Senate — and arrives on his desk by the end of next week. |

Oakland Unified lacks funds to pay for all capital projects so board halts some |
Already reeling from looming layoffs to close its budget deficit, the Oakland Unified school board decided to halt some construction projects underway because the district can’t afford to complete them. In a 4-3 vote Wednesday, the board agreed to abruptly stop construction planning on nine projects and divert about $74.5 million from those projects to 40 others already underway. In addition, the board agreed to dip into other capital funds to help pay for those projects. |

LAUSD teachers begin casting ballots in strike-authorization vote |
Amid increasing public rhetoric between their union and the school district, Los Angeles Unified teachers began casting ballots in a strike-authorization vote as contract talks await help from a state mediator. The balloting will continue for a week. If teachers vote in favor, it does not automatically mean a strike will occur. The vote simply authorizes leaders of the union — United Teachers Los Angeles — to call for a walkout of labor talks stall. |
