VIDEO: How California’s System of Support assists underperforming districts
As we’ve mentioned previously, the California School Dashboard was designed to offer parents, educators and the community a comprehensive look at how K-12 schools and their districts are performing. But what happens when Dashboard results show a school or district needs a little extra help? Well, that’s where county offices of education and other agencies come in, providing targeted interventions through a structured system of support. Our Media Services team produced this brief video to explain the system and its capacity to help schools and district improve through customized assistance.

LAUSD chief Austin Beutner ushers in a new school year with a message: ‘Do what works for your schools’
LA Unified kicked off a new school year last week, with a new superintendent looking to lead in a new way. Unlike other years, there was no big screen with an elaborate powerpoint presentation or video showing the district’s accomplishments and data. There were no department head speeches, no announcements of a strategic plan or particular campaign or goals. Five of the six board members were in attendance, but this time they were seated with the rest of the audience and not on stage.

Despite high need and recruiting push, preschool seats sit empty
Many districts say it’s the stringent state and federal income eligibility requirements that are keeping students away from preschool and leaving seats empty. Others cite the programs’ inflexible, mostly half-day hours, which make it difficult for low-income working families who need more options.

San Jose district draws the line — to no avail — on adding another charter school
The school board of the East Side Union High School District in San Jose defied state law last year when it cited financial impact in rejecting a proposal for a second charter high school from San Francisco-based KIPP Public Schools. Now district officials want the Legislature to change the state’s charter school statute so other districts can make the same decision they did without breaking the law.

To immunize or not: Vaccines up in California following 2016 law, but so are medical exemptions
More kindergartners are getting vaccinated since a 2016 law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown mandating immunizations while banning personal beliefs exemptions. However, there has been a slight uptick in medical exemptions as personal beliefs exemptions decrease statewide. While the increase is slight, the changing trend is cause for concern for at east one Southern County public health officer.
