During a Wednesday afternoon recess in November 2016, a student at Crown Point Junior Music Academy asked her friend if she could keep a secret. The next day, the girl and a friend went to the principal’s office together to tell school staff about what happened.

Poway launches pilot program aimed at mainstreaming special ed students
At Mt. Carmel High School, a class of students bent over worksheets, puzzling out exponential functions in a math class that offers supplemental instruction. About a dozen of the students in the class are in special education, and the rest are their general education peers. Watching them work, you can’t easily tell who is who. They work in groups of three or four, with a teacher and instructional aid moving between clusters of students to guide them.

Tenth-grader Angel Chavez, a student at Middle College High School, along with Derick Lundy, a 10th grade at San Gorgonio High got a little ahead of the math game this summer. Angel and Derick are two of the participants in the Summer Algebra Institute.

New charter schools to open this fall despite efforts to curb growth
Tiffany Gilmore, founder and CE of the Garvey/Allen Visual and Performing Arts Academy, is one of several charter school operators who will open schools in California this fall despite an increasingly contentious climate surrounding charter schools. Charter school growth in California has slowed over the past five years, although last year saw an uptick in the total number of charter schools.
