OCDE NEWSROOM

California Department of Education publishes guidance for reopening campuses
State Superintendent Tony Thurmond on Monday unveiled the California Department of Education’s highly anticipated guidance for reopening campuses, recommending face coverings, physical distancing and regular symptom screening for students and staff. Thurmond acknowledged that districts are working collaboratively with county health officials as they develop their own plans and procedures for resuming operations in the fall. He said he anticipates many will offer hybrid models of in-person instruction and distance learning.

Dozens of OC educators honored for work in support of language learners
For the past seven years, OCDE has honored local educators, administrators, community liaisons and parents who’ve championed the academic and social success of language learners. The 8th annual Language Learner Celebration was set to do it again at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin on April 29. But the department’s Literacy and Language team had to cancel the event in response to the growing COVID-19 crisis.

State offers school opening guidelines; some parents want fewer restrictions
The California Department of Education released a 62-page guidebook Monday detailing what it wants to see when schools start next school year. The state’s wish list includes face coverings and daily temperature checks for students and staff, campuses that minimize access to volunteers, and classrooms that separate students by six-feet, possibly by moving classes to cafeterias, auditoriums, gyms and outdoors. How students will learn in the age of coronavirus could vary. The guidebook offers four different models of instruction.

California guidelines for reopening schools don’t answer questions about sports returning
The California state superintendent issued guidelines Monday about reopening the state’s public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the announcement did little to clarify the status of high school sports for the coming school year. Tony Thurmond, state superintendent of public instruction, released a 62-page guide book, “Stronger Together: A Guidebook for the Safe Reopening of California’s Public Schools.” It briefly addressed high school athletics.

How Inland Empire schools plan to reopen in the coronavirus era
They received guidelines from the state Monday, June 8, that offer suggestions but are not binding. But, with only about two months until the start of the new school year, some Inland Empire districts weren’t waiting on state recommendations — and some intend to go their own way entirely.

Students should expect masks, temperature checks and a lot of hand washing under California guidance
California schools will look different when they reopen next year, according to new statewide guidance. Students should expect to wash their hands and have their temperature taken often. They will likely wear masks and only attend classes a few days a week with a small group of classmates. Signs and taped marks on the floor will tell them which direction to walk and where to stand in hallways and in the cafeteria.

California Released Its Guidelines For Reopening Schools. You're Right If You Think You've Heard This Before.
Masks for everyone, temperature checks, hybrid schedules, seating charts on school buses, physical barriers between lunch tables, and way more handwashing. That is just some of the guidance in the California Department of Education's guidelines for reopening school campuses, released Monday. If those guidelines sound familiar, it's because they mirror the framework released by the Los Angeles County Office of Education last month.
