Laguna Beach High School graduates its Class of 2020 in a unusual ceremony at Guyer Stadium
Graduating seniors walked across Laguna Beach High School’s Guyer Field on Thursday, June 11, while family members and friends cheered them on from their cars. Typically, Laguna Beach High School graduates seniors on the Festival of Arts grounds where the famed Pageant of the Masters is held. Many of the 254 graduating seniors who received their diplomas have been classmates their entire lives.

Mission Viejo Class of 2020 rolls through graduation celebration
Mission Viejo High seniors popped up out of sunroofs and hung out of car windows soaking in the cheers of their teachers and administrators during a drive-thru event on campus Thursday, June 11. The Saddleback Unified School District held drive-thru events for seniors at all of its campuses to celebrate their achievements as best as possible as the coronavirus continues to make mass gatherings like commencement ceremonies impossible.

Laguna Hills High seniors get a loud send off
Members of Laguna Hills High’s Class of 2020 dressed in their caps and gowns on Thursday, June 11, and were cheered by teachers and staff as they toured in cars through campus. Throughout the week students also had the opportunity to make an appointment to take photos on campus in their graduation garb. The district still hopes a more traditional graduation ceremony will be able to be held for the schools on July 13.

Valencia High’s Class of 2020 wheels through graduation
Proud photographers popped up from sunroofs and hung out car windows to catch that important moment when their seniors accepted a diploma, marking the end of a high school career and the beginning of a bright future. Valencia High celebrated a graduation for its Class of 2020 on Thursday, June 11, that was socially distanced, but still boisterous and memorable.

Yorba Linda High seniors celebrate with drive-thru ceremony

Cheering families hung out car windows and even stood in the beds of pickup trucks as their graduates received diplomas at Yorba Linda High on Wednesday, June 10. The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District is holding drive-thru events for seniors at all of its campuses to celebrate their achievements as best as possible as the coronavirus continues to make mass gatherings like commencement ceremonies impossible. A live-streamed video was also planned for families to enjoy at home.

Should police officers be in schools? California education leaders rethink school safety
A movement to reform California public school policing and drastically rethink school safety is quickly gaining momentum amid nationwide protests against police brutality following the killing of George Floyd. In Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento and San Francisco, administrators and school boards are under pressure from community groups who are renewing demands for police-free schools and calling on districts to instead hire more counselors and other student support services.

UC Irvine to offer remote undergraduate instruction in fall, but students will still be allowed on campus
As the nine University of California campuses serving undergraduates grapple with how to conduct classes this fall, at least one has decided that virtually all its undergraduate instruction will be offered remotely rather than in person. “At the undergraduate level, essentially all instruction will be remote,” wrote Michael Dennin, the dean of the division of undergraduate education, and Gillian Hayes, the dean of the graduate division, in an email sent to faculty this week.

Local Districts Working to Meet State Guidelines For Reopening Schools
Summer is finally here after months of distance learning amid the coronavirus pandemic, but San Diego area school districts are already preparing for the fall. Earlier this week, California State Superintendent Tony Thurmond released a 50-page handbook on safely reopening schools, but he emphasized that local districts would decide when and how students are allowed back on campuses.
