Taxpayers could pay to attract teachers. But is California really running out of them?
Should taxpayers underwrite special benefits to attract new teachers, such as affordable housing, expanded maternity leave and tax breaks? California lawmakers have put forward a raft of proposals offering extra perks for teachers this session, prompted by what supporters say is an urgent need to do more to encourage people to get into the profession or stay there. Available data, though, doesn’t back up such dire assessments of the state’s overall teacher supply. Data shows that, as state finances have improved, so have the number of teachers in public schools.

SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE

Final tests shows no additional schools with lead in water
The final round of tests in San Diego Unified School District found no schools other than ones that were previously detected had high levels of lead in drinking fountains and faucets, district officials said Thursday. The City of San Diego began testing water at school sites in March, and drinking fountains at Co-Operative Charter School 2 and Emerson-Bandini School were found to have twice the acceptable lead level set by the state. The two Southcrest schools share the same campus.

Small size, flexibility are draws for new Corona-Norco ‘hybrid’ school
When she starts high school this fall, Brooklyn Burns won’t have to worry about being just another face in a crowd of classmates. Burns will have a flexible schedule that lets her study at home three days a week. The other two days, she won’t need to arrive at school until 9 a.m. The 14-year-old Eastvale resident is part of the inaugural group of 80 ninth-graders enrolling at a new school in Norco that combines online and traditional classroom learning.

State officials cool to school districts' request to become 'Innovation Zone'
Four years ago, eight California schools districts that banded together in a nonprofit organization called CORE received federal permission under the No Child Left Behind Act to create their own school accountability system. Now the districts want the state’s permission to continue their experimentation with measurements of student growth, school climate and high school readiness. And CORE wants to let potentially dozens of other California districts participate in their work.

Oakland charters more likely to enroll higher-performing students than district schools
Oakland’s charter schools enroll students who are more academically prepared than students who attend district-run schools, giving city charter schools an edge on the question of which kind of school excels at educating its students, according to a new analysis of the city’s public school landscape. The study was considered especially noteworthy and has statewide significance because 30 percent of Oakland students attend charter schools – one of the highest concentrations of charter students in California.

California colleges transform remedial courses to raise graduation rates
Before Aida Tseggai could major in biology at Cal State Dominguez Hills, she had to catch up in math. She passed a non-credit remedial math class in the fall and then was offered a new pathway – a for-credit course in college-level algebra that provided extra class time, tutoring and review of more fundamental material. Such combination classes – known as co-requisites, bridges or hybrids – are seen as a crucial tool to help hundreds of thousands of CSU students climb out of the remedial education hole in which some feel trapped.
