Southern California educators endure 5-day boot camp to learn about Marine Corps |
“Get your stuff and get off my bus! Now!” bellowed Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Jagerson, a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Amy Krisch, a fit blonde, screamed “Aye, Aye, Sir!” as she jumped from one of the two white Marine Corps buses that had pulled up to the recruit depot on Tuesday, June 13. Krisch, 32, wasn’t your usual Marine recruit. The special events and annual giving manager at St. John Bosco Catholic High School in Bellflower was there with 30 Southern California teachers, counselors, coaches and administrators. |

After 32 years, Top of the World school's Claudia Redfern is retiring |
For visitors to Laguna Beach’s Top of the World Elementary School, Claudia Redfern is likely the first person they will see upon walking through the office doors. It usually does not take more than a few seconds before Redfern has asked how she can help. Redfern, the Top of the World Elementary School's receptionist and after-school coordinator, will retire later this month after 32 years at the Laguna Beach school. |

How the 2017-18 funding increase for California education will be spent |
The Legislature passed a $183 billion state budget for 2017-18 last week that includes a $3.2 billion increase in funding under Proposition 98, the formula that determines how much of the General Fund will go to K-12 school, community colleges and state-funded preschool programs. The additional $3.2 billion represents an increase of 4.4 percent over last year’s allocation, bringing Prop. 98 next year to $74.5 billion. |

CA, like others, waiting for more from feds on ESSA plans |
The Brown administration appears to be taking a wait and see attitude with respect to a baffling guidance letter sent by the U.S. Department of Education to Delaware education officials rejecting parts of its proposed plan for implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act. Among other issues, the letter suggested that states could not offer districts a range of options when it comes to measuring college and career readiness—something California, like Delaware and many other states are proposing to do. |

New research: student well-being higher in diverse schools |
A study by University of California Los Angeles researchers published in the journal Child Development on Tuesday finds that students who attend more racially- and ethnically-diverse schools report less vulnerability, loneliness, insecurity and bullying.
“There’s more of a balance of power in these diverse schools,” said report co-author Sandra Graham.
