At L.A.'s only school for the deaf, parents want leaders who speak the same language |
Ever since her son was 6 months old, Juliet Hidalgo has been bringing him to the Marlton School, a low-slung building in Baldwin Hills that for generations has been a second home for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in Los Angeles.
Marlton staff taught Hidalgo's brother and sister, both of whom are deaf. Hidalgo had planned to enroll her daughter, taking advantage of a popular program that allows hearing children to learn American Sign Language alongside their deaf siblings.

Outside groups doubling down on race for schools chief |
Despite significant support from the California Teachers Association, outside groups supporting Assemblyman Tony Thurmond for state schools chief have been outspent by his competitor, Marshall Tuck, by more than two-to-one since April.
According to campaign statements filed last week, independent expenditure committees favoring Tuck, a former charter school administrator, have spent $8.5 million since the middle of April. During roughly the same period, outside supporters of Thurmond have spent just $3.5 million.

Why tiny brains are getting massive attention in the California governor's race |
The first years of life are extremely important for our brains. One million neural connections are made every single second of life until the age of 3, according to current research, and the preschool years have a long-term influence on outcomes in health and education. That means there's a very small window of time to make a monumental impact on the course of development. |
