These Newport Harbor High School athletes experienced how the other half cheers |
Weeks of practice culminated on Thursday in a two-minute dance and tumbling routine that paired seasoned Newport Harbor High School cheerleaders with first-timers: male athletes from other sports. For 10 years, pep squad coach Kris Higman has invited boys to learn a routine for the final pep rally of the school year, but she said this year’s contingent was the biggest yet, with 16 athletes from five sports. |

In race for California schools chief, candidates are buoyed by big money from charter supporters and unions |
In the race for state superintendent of public instruction, standard party affiliations don’t much matter. The two major players here are teachers unions and charter schools — and their big spending tends to blur a clear picture of the front-runners. The charter camp supports Marshall Tuck, an education consultant and Democrat who formerly managed turnaround efforts at a group of low-performing Los Angeles public schools. The pick of the teachers unions is state Assemblyman Tony Thurmond, also a Democrat, who represents the Richmond area, north of Oakland. |

We're Going to Court to Stop San Diego Unified's Email-Destruction Policy |
Voice of San Diego has filed for a temporary restraining order to halt San Diego Unified School District’s destruction of email archives over a year old that’s set to begin June 1.
A hearing is scheduled for Friday, June 1, at 2:30 p.m. On May 9, NBC 7 reported that the district, after a year of considering the issue, would delete all old emails beginning Friday. Last year, district leaders had decided to delete all emails older than six months without even consulting trustees on the Board of Education. But pushback from journalists and the community made them reconsider.

Let's Stop Talking About The '30 Million Word Gap' |
Did you know that kids growing up in poverty hear 30 million fewer words by age 3? Chances are, if you're the type of person who reads a newspaper or listens to NPR, you've heard that statistic before. Since 1992 this finding has, with unusual power, shaped the way educators, parents and policymakers think about educating poor children. |

LBHS Coach Arrested in Gang Inquiry |
A former Laguna Beach track coach was among three men arrested by Costa Mesa police, who said they seized drugs and weapons in connection with an ongoing white supremacist gang investigation. Among the trio arrested last week was Brian Jay Bishop, 35, identified by police as a resident of Trinidad, Tex., who district officials said resigned from a post as part-time coach on Tuesday, May 22. The resignation comes the week after the Laguna Beach High School track and field season concluded. Bishop was hired as a walk on coach at the high school in August 2016, district spokeswoman Leisa Winston said. |
