JSerra seniors dive into the summer — and the school pool — on final day of high school careers
Graduating seniors ended the school year at JSerra Catholic High School with a splash, on Wednesday, May 22, by jumping into the school’s pool while in their uniforms. The event had its origin in 2009 as a senior prank and has evolved into a yearly tradition supported by the school.

Teachers don sombreros, mustaches in ‘insensitive’ yearbook photos, Calif. school says
A California high school’s not laughing about yearbook photos showing Spanish teachers decked out in sombreros, ponchos and fake mustaches, KNSD reports. A statement released by San Pasqual High School administrators calls the photos “insensitive” and says the teachers showed “poor judgment,” KGTV reported. The Escondido school is north of San Diego.

Escondido elementary teachers reach contract agreement with district
The Escondido Union School District on Thursday struck a tentative deal with its teachers over their labor contract after months of protests and stalled negotiations. According to the new contract, teachers will receive a raise of 3.37 percent, retroactive to July 2018. They will also receive a 2.44 percent salary increase, effective July 1 of this year.

Girls sue San Jose school district over ex-coach’s photographs
The families of two girls secretly photographed by a former Willow Glen Middle School track coach who later pleaded no contest to child molestation and pornography charges alleged in a lawsuit Thursday that San Jose Unified School District failed to act on earlier complaints and rumors.

California confronts lack of qualified teachers
California is experiencing a lack of qualified teachers even as enrollment rates in preparation programs rise. “Teacher shortages have been worsening in California since 2015. Growth in teacher demand as the economy has improved has collided with steep declines in the supply of new teachers, leading to significant increases in the hiring of underprepared teachers, especially in districts serving high-need students,” the Learning Policy Institute reported last year.

Arcadia High School hosted the fifth annual prom for special education students, a celebration created and sponsored by the West San Gabriel Valley Special Education Local Plan Area, which tends to the special needs of about 10,000 students across 14 school districts. About 100 of them attended the junior/senior exclusive prom on Thursday.
