Drowning in debt from employee benefits and unwilling to reform, LAUSD looks for lifeline in Measure EE
Los Angeles Unified estimates more than half of its general fund will be needed to pay down pension and health benefit debt by 2031, leaving little for students in a district already struggling against declining enrollment and competition from charter schools. But district officials are hopeful a remedy will come from Measure EE, the 16-cent-per-square-foot parcel tax on the June 4 ballot that promises to reduce class sizes, retain quality teachers and provide services and programs to students.

Paid family leave for teachers set for vote in Assembly
Among the more than 1,000 bills that won passage to the Assembly floor last week was one that would require all K-12 schools and community colleges to provide at least six weeks family leave to employees. AB 500 by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, would greatly improve the existing pregnancy leave benefit that typically requires teachers and other certified employees to shoulder the cost of hiring their own replacements.

California Teachers Pay For Their Own Substitutes During Extended Sick Leave
A 40-year-old California law requiring public school teachers on extended sick leave to pay for their own substitute teachers is under scrutiny by some state lawmakers after NPR member station KQED reported on the practice. KQED found that a San Francisco Unified elementary school teacher had to pay the cost of her own substitute — amounting to nearly half of her paycheck — while she underwent extended cancer treatment. Since the story published, more public school teachers have reached out to describe similar hardships.
