Fast rise in AI nudes of teens has unprepared schools, legal system scrambling for solutions
The trouble began, she said, when the boy asked to follow her on TikTok. The 13-year-old girl, an 8th grader at Aliso Viejo Middle School, said the request popped up on her profile in February. Her account was private, and she’d kept most of her previous followers to a small circle of friends and family. But she was familiar with the boy from being in several classes together. She hit accept. A few weeks later, the girl said, she learned that not only had the boy taken a screenshot of her from her account, but he had also used artificial intelligence software to place put her face on a photo of a nude body that wasn’t hers. And now, a small group of boys was sharing manipulated photos of her among themselves.

Murrieta’s school district must stop enforcing a policy that requires parents to be notified if their child identifies as transgender, the California Department of Education ordered after finding the policy discriminates against transgender youth. The Wednesday, April 10, letter gives the Murrieta Valley Unified School District five days to tell staff and students that the policy, approved in August, will not be implemented. Bill to mandate ‘science of reading’ in California classrooms dies
A bill that would have required California teachers to use the “science of reading,” which spotlights phonics, to teach children to read has died without a hearing. Assembly Bill 2222, authored by Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, D-Baldwin Park, will not advance in the Legislature this year, according to Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, who described the state’s student reading and literacy rates as “a serious problem,” adding that the bill should receive a “methodical” review by all key groups before there is a “costly overhaul” of how reading is taught in California.

Q&A: USC’s Morgan Polikoff on new poll data & the ‘purple classroom’
A recent poll from a pair of University of Southern California researchers found broad agreement among Americans about the value of public education but partisan divides regarding what schools should teach and at what grade levels. Respondents also favor parental rights as a concept but don’t appear to have considered the practical aspects of how schools should approach exempting individual students from particular lessons.
