OC Arts and Disability Festival to make a splash with creativity and inclusivity on April 27
The 48th annual Orange County Arts and Disability Festival is weeks away from returning to MainPlace Mall in Santa Ana on Saturday, April 27, with the theme “Make a Splash.” Hosted by the Orange County Department of Education in partnership with Orange County Arts and Disability, the daylong family-friendly event is a cornerstone of Arts Orange County’s annual “Imagination Celebration.” The festival will welcome Rena Strober as the new mistress of ceremonies and Mayleen Richardson, an American Sign Language interpreter, as they lead the show, providing a platform for students and adults with disabilities to exhibit artwork and showcase their talents in writing, dance, music, theater and visual arts.

Careers Without Borders: Activist Dolores Huerta inspires students to enact change
In 1972, civil rights activist Dolores Huerta inspired members of the United Farm Workers union to chant “Si, se puede,” or “Yes, we can.” Five decades later, her famous slogan is now being used to empower a new generation. Students and staff from the Orange County Department of Education’s Alternative Education division were joined by Huerta for a virtual sit-down during Women’s History Month as part of the Careers Without Borders speaker series.

Orange Unified trustees set to discuss next steps to fill recalled board seats
After the effort to recall Orange Unified School District Trustees Madison Miner and Rick Ledesma proved successful, the five remaining OUSD board members will decide how to fill the two vacant seats. Board members have three options to fill the two vacant seats: appoint two new board members by May 21 who will serve until the election in November; leave the seats vacant until November; or, if the OUSD board takes no action for 60 days, the Orange County superintendent will call for the election in November.

Unions allege LAUSD is misusing arts education funds
High school junior Maya Shtangrud may have given up on her childhood dream of learning to play the violin — but now, serving as an arts justice fellow at the ACLU of Southern California, she remains steadfast in her advocacy for arts education. Like many, she hoped Proposition 28 — a ballot measure passed by roughly 65% of voters in November 2022 to allocate about $1 billion toward arts education each year — would lead to greater opportunities for her fellow students. She’s not quite as optimistic now and is joining a group of teachers and advocates to sound alarms on the district’s alleged mismanagement of their estimated $76.7 million in Proposition 28 money — which they claim has been used to pay for current teachers rather than create new programs or bolster existing ones.

Politics, threats, agendas have permeated search for Fresno Unified superintendent, many say
Among accusations of racism, intimidation and political play, ensuing from a March 20 decision by the Fresno Unified School District board to interview internal candidates first in the process to hire a superintendent, some district employees have faced harassment and threats, with some members of the Hmong community also citing attacks against them. Sources, including district spokesperson Nikki Henry, told EdSource that board members and Deputy Superintendent Misty Her — a candidate for the open position and the presumptive interim superintendent — have been threatened. Her, specifically, has faced racial harassment, Henry said.

Inappropriate’ photos circulated at another Southern California school
The Los Angeles Unified School District is investigating allegations that “inappropriate images” were created and shared by students at Fairfax High School in a case that closely resembles at least two other recent incidents at local public schools. In a statement distributed to parents and obtained by the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday, LAUSD officials said the inappropriate images were allegedly circulated on a third-party messaging app unaffiliated with the district.
