EDITORIAL
Schools should get technical
The Little Hoover Commission, a state agency that recommends ways to increase government efficiency and effectiveness, has discovered the obvious. Essentially, the commission has concluded that career technical education, formerly known by the now politically incorrect name of "vocational education," should be expanded as an alternative for students to the college-prep track emphasized in California public schools.

Principal to donate a kidney to student
School principals like to leave a lasting impression on students, and Franklin Middle School's Jim Friel is going the extra mile. Friel is donating a kidney to a 13-year-old eighth-grader. "I've spent 24 years in education trying to make a difference," said Friel, the father of two adult boys. "This is the best opportunity I've had so far."

State owes schools, suit says
Education advocates are expected to file suit today against the state of California for shortchanging school districts $1 billion – a move they say has left districts feeling used like "credit cards." The California School Boards Association, joined by a handful of school districts, wants the state to reimburse K-12 districts for programs they say the state required and should have paid for.
