ASK THE TEACHER |
We don't like our school? Can we transfer to another one in the district? |
Q. We are not unhappy with the district, but we are not pleased with our school. Our son is only in kindergarten and we will finish the year, but do you know if we can go to another school in this district for the rest of elementary? |

California schools are failing all our kids |
State schools Supt. Jack O'Connell hosted a summit in Sacramento last week of 4,000 educators, policymakers and experts. He asked them to confront California's "racial achievement gap" -- the persistently lower test scores of California's African American and Latino public school students compared with their white and Asian peers. Strikingly, the state's other "achievement gap" was barely mentioned at the summit; this is the gap between California and the rest of the nation. |

As China booms, so does Mandarin in U.S. schools |
It's a scene playing out in more and more classrooms across the nation: students — from kindergarten on — learning Mandarin Chinese, in some cases instead of Spanish, French or other languages that have long been more popular in U.S. schools. It's partly a reflection of how parents increasingly see China's emergence as an economic power as something for which they should prepare their children. |

Study Links Drop in Test Scores to a Decline in Time Spent Reading |
Americans — particularly young Americans — appear to be reading less for fun, and as that happens, their reading test scores are declining. At the same time, performance in other academic disciplines like math and science is dipping for students whose access to books is limited, and employers are rating workers deficient in basic writing skills. |

Printing Goof Nullifies U.S. Reading Exam |
A printing error by a contractor has invalidated the reading test results of U.S. students on a prominent international exam, federal education officials said yesterday. Since 2000, the Program for International Student Assessment has been administered every three years to provide a snapshot of how 15-year-olds around the world stack up in reading, math and science. Results from the 2006 tests, which focused primarily on science, are scheduled to be released Dec. 4. |
