Students at Huntington Beach’s Sowers Middle School celebrate World Fit Walk championship
Students at Sowers Middle School certainly know how to step lively. After being invited by their neighbors at Dwyer Middle School to compete in the World Fit program this year, Sowers responded by not only participating, but also winning the international competition in the large-school category. Dwyer, coincidentally, took second place. On Thursday, Nov. 16, former Olympic water polo players Genai Kerr and Michael Zellmer rewarded the 1,200 Sowers students by presenting them with the 2017 World Fit Walk championship trophy at a school-wide celebration.

Buena Park High student meant good, not harm, by reposting bogus campus-shooting threat
A 15-year-old Buena Park High School student took an online shooting threat allegedly made by an Anaheim student and re-posted it, but he was not going to be arrested as investigators don’t think he committed a crime, Buena Park police said Thursday. The boy, who was questioned by police on Thursday, indicated that he was re-posting the bogus threat in an effort to make the public aware of it since he apparently thought it was legitimate, said Buena Park police Lt. Tamra Banks.

Young and homeless in America
More than 4 percent of adolescents and 10 percent of young adults nationwide were living on the street, in cars or shelters, or couch-surfing at some point in the last year, according to a sweeping study by the University of Chicago released Wednesday. The study, “Missed Opportunities: Youth Homelessness in America,” was based on random phone surveys of 26,000 young people ages 13 to 25, and represents one of the most accurate, wide-ranging overviews ever conducted of homeless youth, a group whose numbers have long eluded researchers, educators and social workers.

Social-emotional exercises important for teachers too
Teacher participation in mindfulness-based exercises can reduce burnout among educators as well as turnover rates which can negatively impact student performance in the classroom, according to new research from the University of Virginia. Mindful awareness practices, such as meditation, yoga or tai chi, may be particularly useful for helping teachers develop the skills they need to manage the demands of teaching, and can be practiced formally or informally, such as during routine daily activities like walking or eating lunch.

Benefits of early childhood education persist into high school, study says
Participation in high-quality early childhood education has persistent effects on academic performance and might save a lot of money for school districts, according to a new study out Thursday.
