Who is working to put computers into the hands of low-income students?
Vickie Jones and 10-year-old grandson, Quincy Taylor, are fixtures at Long Beach’s Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library. “We’re here every day after my grandson gets out of school,” Jones said. They can be found at one of several sprawling banks of computers. Jones said she has a “small laptop” at home, but can’t afford a broadband subscription. So she heads to the library so Quincy, a fourth-grader at Jane Addams Elementary School, can do his online homework. She goes online, too.

Lake View Elementary kids rolled out the red, white and blue for local veterans Wednesday, Nov. 8, with a special assembly and flag ceremony in advance of Veterans Day. In addition to comments from officials and American Legion members, students sang patriotic songs.

Community college leaders criticize Gov. Brown's online college push
Leaders within the California Community College system are objecting to Gov. Jerry Brown’s plan to create a new online-only community college. Both faculty leaders and members of the Board of Governors — the group that oversees the 114-campus system — said the process for creating an online college is rushed and expressed skepticism about the merits of a fully online college program.

After-school programs strongly benefit at-risk students
Students in urban, low-income communities tend to have stronger academic skills and self-confidence when enrolled in high-quality after-school programs, according to a new study from New York University, Steinhardt. Researchers from the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development found that after-school programs with good social dynamics, responsive instruction and behavior management improved academic outcomes for students both with and without social and behavioral difficulties in grades three through eight.

Labor tensions add to district fiscal woes
If it seems that labor strife in the Golden State is running higher than normal, it is. Last month, teachers in Calaveras Unified went on a four-day strike before coming to terms on a two-year contract. Tense standoffs in Sacramento and San Francisco were defused just ahead of strike deadlines. But the threat of a walkout still looms over schools in Fresno, Oceanside, San Mateo, Davis, Chico and San Juan Capistrano—there are probably others whose contract issues are not being covered by local media.

An all-online community college: A solution to working class needs, or a dangerous move?
A proposal that advocates hope will use online courses to help the job prospects of about 2 million working class Californians got its first hearing in Sacramento on Monday. The California Community College's Board of Governors heard three proposals aimed at helping a population of Californians who have some college under their belt, may not have earned their high school diploma, and don’t feel community college’s current offerings address their needs.
