Removal of IDEA guidance gives DeVos new headache |
U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has entangled herself in yet another policy dustup, but this time the adversary carries potent political muscle—families of students with disabilities. Late last week it came to light that the Trump administration had quietly removed from public use some 72 guidance documents, including widely used directories covering transitional planning for young adults, and one detailing the arcane legal components to due process guarantees. |

Teachers report stressed, anxious students in the 'Age of Trump' |
In a new UCLA survey, teachers report that in the current political climate, some of their students fear for themselves and their families. Others reported that students seem more "emboldened" to express racist and derogatory views. Previous surveys we've reported on, including one from the Southern Poverty Law Center, also found increases in school bullying related to overheated political rhetoric. |

VIDEO: Classroom superstars shine at Orange County Teachers of the Year awards dinner |
There were soaring musical numbers. There were VIPs on stage and in the crowd. Even Mickey and Minnie made an appearance. But the true stars of this show were 62 distinguished teachers from school districts and community colleges throughout Orange County. Sponsored by SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, the 2018 Orange County Teachers of the Year awards dinner added a measure of showbiz glitz and a dash of Disney magic as it recognized the county’s top educators, including six finalists, in the Disneyland Hotel’s Grand Ballroom on Tuesday night. |

2 Years After 'Opt Out,' Are Students Taking Fewer Tests? |
Two years ago this month, President Barack Obama had a clear message for teachers and parents who were concerned about all the standardized tests that students were taking: He was on their side. The president's comments came amid a national outcry over the days — and weeks — of the school year that millions of students were spending filling in bubbles on standardized tests. It was the height of the "opt out" movement, where hundreds of thousands of parents were vowing to keep their kids at home during testing periods. Many did just that. |
