‘She’s given her life to these schools’: Newport-Mesa trustee Judy Franco prepares to step aside after nearly 4 decades
When Judy Franco was appointed to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District board in 1980, she didn’t imagine that 37 years later she would still be representing Area 5. She said she had dropped hints about stepping down at the end of her current term, but when she announced Tuesday that she wouldn’t run in the 2018 election, some observers nevertheless were surprised.

Students with no schools. Teachers with no homes. Will Sonoma schools ‘get back to normal’?
Teacher Linda Severs lost her school but not her house. Parent Matt Todhunter lost his home but not the school his children attended. And Debra Sanders, who has spent the last six years providing school services for homeless families, suddenly found her own family in that same classification.

School districts address nurse shortage in creative ways
Last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics called for a minimum of one full-time registered nurse in every school. Before that, the recommended ratio had been 1 nurse to 750 students. California, the nation’s most populous state, is far from hitting either goal. Its ratio was 1-to-2,592 in the 2016-17 school year. In many districts, one nurse must cover two or more schools.

In strategy shift, Gates Foundation to spend bulk of education dollars on 'locally driven solutions'
In a significant shift in strategy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the nation’s largest charitable foundation, will invest the biggest share of its education philanthropy dollars over the next five years to support networks of teachers, schools and districts that come up with their own “locally driven solutions” to improving student achievement. That strategy was outlined yesterday by Bill Gates himself at the annual conference Thursday of the Council of the Great City Schools in Cleveland.

No Easy Road for Homeless Kids to Stay in Familiar Schools
Being homeless takes a big toll on kids in the classroom. Today, about 1.3 million children and youth across the country fit that legal definition, the majority of them staying temporarily with friends or family. A little-known federal law — the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act — is tailored to helping those kids succeed, and this year its provisions got even stronger.

Unions must adapt after Supreme Court ruling
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to deliver a major hit next year to the ability of public employee unions like the California Teachers Association to raise money, but that doesn’t mean unions will become obsolete, according to policy experts.

Field still struggling to grasp readiness measures
Absent more state guidance on how to define and measure college and career readiness, schools and community stakeholders should be encouraged to develop regional approaches to implement the concept, new research suggests. Building on a 2015 survey of educators and policy makers, the Education Insights Center at California State University, Sacramento found teachers and school leaders are still struggling with what constitutes college and career readiness given that there remains no statewide definition.
