OC esports federation produces positive STEM learning outcomes, researchers say |
Students who participated in a national esports league that launched in Orange County became more interested in STEM careers, demonstrated greater critical thinking skills and reported higher levels of school engagement, according to newly released research from UC Irvine. In fact, after two years of analyzing data, researchers found that students affiliated with the North America Scholastic Esports Federation produced more positive outcomes in nearly every category measured. Constance Steinkuehler, a professor of Informatics at UCI, has been been exploring the nexus between games and authentic learning experiences for more than a decade.

Lawsuit filed against ex-La Habra High teacher and school district over alleged 1987 sexual assault |
A former La Habra High School student has filed a lawsuit against a retired teacher and the Fullerton Joint Union High School District, alleging he was the victim of sexual assault by a known predator. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court under a new law that gives victims of childhood sexual assault more time to bring forward a suit. It alleges that the unidentified plaintiff was assaulted by former teacher and coach Charles T. Ritz III during an overnight school trip in 1987.

How do school bonds work? |
Education bonds are voter-approved funds that can only be used for school facilities. Districts collect this money by taxing property owners on the assessed value of their properties. Residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural properties are all taxed. Tax-exempt properties include churches, nonprofits, and government buildings.
Districts sell the bond to investors. The local bond is similar to a loan, much like a home equity line, but for the school district. Each district puts a cap on how much money should be taxed.

Children’s mental health a cause for concern in report on California youth policies |
California is making progress improving the lives of its 9.2 million children, but still lags behind other states — especially on issues related to young people’s mental health, according to a report released Tuesday. “The 2020 California Children’s Report Card,” published by the Oakland-based advocacy organization Children Now, gives California an overall grade of “C-” for its programs that provide health, education and family services, as well as child welfare and adolescent services for young people from birth to age 26. The report is Children Now’s 31st annual look at state services affecting children.

Shouts, cheers and tears erupted in a Narbonne High School classroom Monday morning, Jan. 27, when a group of virtual enterprise students and their teacher learned they’d been awarded an expense-paid trip to New York to participate in the Youth Business Summit. Soon, they were all on their feet and huddled in a group hug with their teacher, Sharon Peoples, a veteran Los Angeles district teacher who has been at the Harbor City Narbonne campus for three years.
