Fire scorches laboratory of Fullerton school; after-school participants evacuated
Teachers evacuated students from a Fullerton elementary school after spotting smoke in a lab that caught fire Wednesday, Jan. 22. The fire broke out at Laguna Road Elementary School, 300 W. Laguna Rd., at about 3: 20 p.m., Fullerton/Brea Fire Department Division Chief Kathy Schaefer said. Faculty who saw smoke billowing inside an unoccupied science lab immediately notified authorities and escorted students away from the area. Classes were not in session at the time, but an after-school program was in progress at the time the fire was reported, Schaefer said. There were less than 30 students on campus and several faculty members, none of whom were injured.

Religious School Choice Case May Yield Landmark Supreme Court Decision
Religious School Choice Case May Yield Landmark Supreme Court Decision Both sides of the long-running fight over vouchers for religious schools are preparing for a watershed moment for public education. Oral arguments in the case, Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, have attracted briefs from President Trump’s Justice Department, which hopes the high court will bolster the administration’s marquee education issue: public funding for private schools. On the other side, Democratic state governments, school boards and teachers’ unions argue that a ruling in favor of a disbanded voucher program in Montana could open the floodgates for publicly funded religious education while draining traditional public schools. Such a decision would be a “virtual earthquake” in the public education system, said Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers. She added that it would send money cascading away from public schools.

California moves closer to eliminating, replacing reading instruction test that has blocked thousands from teaching credential
The California reading instruction test is a major hurdle for many aspiring teachers across the state.  So much so that about one-third who take the test fail the first time, according to state data of the five-year period between 2012 and 2017. The poor performance is prompting action by the state: The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is assembling a panel to recommend alternatives to the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment, or RICA, while state legislators are considering a bill that would replace it.

California unions sue DeVos for repealing ‘gainful employment’ rule
The California Federation of Teachers is teaming up with its parent union and students to sue Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for repealing rules that would have penalized colleges and universities if their graduates did not make enough money to repay their student debt. The CFT, which represents more than 120,000 educators in the state, along with the American Federation of Teachers and the National Student Legal Defense Network filed the lawsuit Wednesday in a federal district court in San Francisco.

Supreme Court Could Be Headed To A Major Unraveling Of Public School Funding
In a case with potentially profound implications, the U.S. Supreme Court's conservative majority seemed ready to invalidate a provision of the Montana state constitution that bars aid to religious schools. A decision like that would work a sea change in constitutional law, significantly removing the longstanding high wall of separation between church and state.
