The teachers’ strike gripped LA for 6 days. A year later, what are the results? |
Arnoldo Vargas’ life hasn’t changed much since last January when he joined thousands of Los Angeles teachers in a momentous six-day strike. He drives the same 2006 Camry, has no more than 41 students in his art classes compared to an average of 42 last year, and would love to see his own eighth-grade son and first-grade daughter in smaller classes. “A lot of the gains, I don’t see them ... day-to-day, to be honest,” said Vargas, who teaches at Banning High School in Wilmington.

CSU trustees delay formal vote on requiring extra year of high school math |
California State University is delaying a vote to formally approve a plan to require a fourth year of high school math for freshman admissions, allowing for more time to study the impact of the change. CSU’s trustees this month will instead vote to begin the process for implementing the proposal, which would require that high school CSU applicants complete a fourth year of high school math or a quantitative reasoning course, such as statistics or computer science.

School-Sent Firearm Storage Material Bill Passes Assembly Committee |
A bill that would send parents materials on safe home firearm storage through schools has unanimously passed a second Assembly committee vote. Under AB 276, authored by Assemblywoman Laura Friedman (D-Glendale), the Department of Education and Department of Justice would create materials about gun storage laws and child safety for school distribution. According to Assemblywoman Friedman, the point of the bill would not be gun restrictions, but rather giving parents information on how to safely store weapons, how to keep weapons from youths who may not have knowledge of weapons, and give a reminder to parents on what the current laws are in California regarding gun storage.

Santa Rosa teachers call for pause in more rigorous graduation requirements amid failing grades |
A change in graduation requirements nearly two years ago at Santa Rosa schools to better prepare all high school students for college has put at least 20% of sophomores in jeopardy of not graduating on time. The union representing more than 900 of the school district’s teachers now is calling on the board of Santa Rosa City Schools to change direction, at least temporarily and work on a more comprehensive college readiness strategy.
