State warns school leaders about new brightly colored ‘rainbow fentanyl’ |
State health officials cautioned school leaders this week about a new and concerning version of the synthetic opioid known as fentanyl. In a letter to superintendents and charter school administrators, California Department of Public Health Director Tomás J. Aragón sounded the alarm on “rainbow fentanyl,” a potentially fatal drug that comes in a variety of forms and bright colors. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has similarly noted that rainbow fentanyl looks like candy, which could be a way to attract children and young people. |

Capo Unified bond measure seeks up to $114 million for school upgrades in Aliso Viejo |
Capistrano Unified School District will put before voters in November a bond measure seeking up to $114 million to fund building and tech upgrades at aging elementary, middle and high school campuses in Aliso Viejo. As part of Measure G, property owners in Aliso Viejo would pay an estimated $44 per $100,000 of the assessed value of their property per year for the next 30 years to repay the bonds. The funds would be used, officials say, to tackle a range of projects to update aging infrastructure at the schools, including replacing portables, fixing leaky roofs and modernizing classrooms. |

LAUSD makes push to bring chronically absent students back to school |
For eighth grader Cloud Mejia, this school year feels like a reset.
He’s slowly gotten back into his daily school routine after a year of chronic absence. It’s been a period of adjustment for him as he’s gone from missing two days the first week of school to one the second to finishing a complete week during the third. He’s missed a few additional days recently too, but now he’s on track to meet his attendance goals early.

California governor rejects mandatory kindergarten law |
Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, vetoed legislation Sunday night that would have required children to attend kindergarten — whether through homeschooling, public or private school — before entering first grade at a public school. As he has with other recent legislative vetoes, Newsom cited the costs associated with providing mandatory kindergarten, about $268 million annually, which he said was not accounted for in the California budget. |

‘Wake-up calls’: New parent survey shows 9% enrollment drop in district schools |
With state data projecting at least 10% drops in student enrollment over the next decade in some California counties, superintendents are worried. “Some of them are scratching their heads, saying ‘This is something we didn’t expect, and it is hard to know if this is our new enrollment trend,’” said Suzanne Speck, executive vice president of Sacramento-based School Services of California. Registrations are pouring in for a webinar the consultant group is holding next month on declining student enrollment. |
