New Anaheim school resource center first of 13 to serve students and families
Anaheim Union High School District unveiled at Sycamore Junior High School on Thursday, Sept. 1, the first of 13 community resource centers planned for campuses around the district to provide a variety of support services to students and their families. Sycamore’s new Community Schools Resource Center is a product of a seven-year, $4 billion state initiative to promote more holistic educational practices – particularly in lower-income, under-served schools. California’s State Board of Education approved the initiative in 2021 and launched it in May.

The Marketplace will keep families stocked with food in SVUSD
Several years ago, the staff at Silverado High School in Mission Viejo began delivering food and gift baskets to the school’s families in need of some assistance during the holidays. In the process, officials at the alternative high school, which is part of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, saw an ongoing need to supply food and other items to underserved families throughout the year, not just during the holiday season, Principal David Gordon said.

Doctor accused of sending ‘sexually motivated’ messages to Newport Harbor High cheerleaders is convicted
A doctor accused of sending “sexually motivated” messages through social media to two high school cheerleaders while he was volunteering at a Newport Beach campus was convicted this week. David Lee Haller, a family practice physician, was found guilty Monday, Aug. 29 of two misdemeanor counts of child annoyance, court records show, in connection with messages sent to two 15-year-old Newport Harbor High students that family members have said left the girls terrified and feeling like they were being stalked.

Gov. Newsom quashes bill to provide more funding for Black students
The sponsor of legislation that would have provided $400 million in additional funding to raise the academic achievement of Black students pulled the proposal hours before likely passage Wednesday, after Gov. Gavin Newsom raised objections. Newsom advisers did not say what those objections were, although four years ago, in a similar bill, Assembly legislative analysts suggested that the legislation would violate Proposition 209, a 1996 constitutional amendment.

State Supt. Thurmond to restart literacy task force, aims for 'comprehensive' approach
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said Wednesday that he would reconvene a Task Force on Early Literacy he appointed a year ago to continue work on addressing early literacy. The task force hasn’t met for seven months. “Stay tuned,” he said during a news conference Wednesday. “We are literally trying to build together a comprehensive approach for addressing literacy in the state.”

Most LA teachers reported they’ve pondered quitting over housing and living costs
More than 70% of teachers in Los Angeles have seriously considered quitting because they aren’t paid enough to afford to live near where they work, the Guardian US reported Thursday. More than 1 in 4 Los Angeles teachers reported in a survey that they are working second jobs in order to be able to afford to live in the city. The Guardian’s report is based on a survey of 13,000 teachers by United Teachers Los Angeles, a labor union.
